Packing your home for a move can feel overwhelming! Here are a few tips to help you tackle this big job in bite-sized pieces.
- Clear Out Items You No Longer Need. Whether you are hiring movers for your home packing or packing up your house yourself, a good first step is to think about what is not going with you on your move. It is easy for things to accumulate in the garage or your closets that you may not find useful to move to your new home. Set aside time in 30-minute increments to go through your home room by room with a bag or container. (You may want to have separate containers for trash and donation items.) Simply put items you don’t want in the container. Once the container is full, take it to a donation center or dispose of it appropriately.
- Gather Important Documents. It is wise to keep important items and documents with you rather than on a moving truck. These include identity documents (ID cards, birth certificates, marriage licenses, social security cards, etc.), vehicle titles, lease or home ownership documents, and medical documents. Set aside these items during your home packing so you can have them readily available throughout (and after) your move, just in case.
- Set Aside Items You Need Immediately. Once you are at your new home, it may take you some time to unpack and organize your belongings. You may wish to have certain items with you or clearly marked in a suitcase or moving box that you wish to use right away when you arrive at your new home. This may include a few cleaning supplies, toiletries, clean clothes, bath towels, etc. Set aside these items so they are easy to access after your home packing is complete.
Considering these three areas will help you or the movers you hire pack your home strategically with everything you need close at hand.
